I thought I might try and start up a discussion here to broaden the scope of this site. It would be interesting to get to know what people think about aspects of the hobby beyond HoW.
The Perry's 'Travel Battle' is all over the wargaming internet at the moment. I won't be getting one, but what interests me are 2 threads that seem to be emerging - first, that people are buying it as a board game just for the interest of owning it, rather than for the specific purpose for which it is designed, i.e going on holiday, travelling for work, living in a tiny flat etc. And second, so many people writing about their purchase are immediately talking about tweaking or changing the rules, changing the figures, or buying 2 games to get more variation in board layouts.
It seems to me that as a genuine Travel Battle this could be fun, but why buy it to play at home? And why pay £50 for something then spend a lot more changing it to how you want it? Either way, as usual, the Perry's seem likely to make a decent profit (and good luck to them).
I won't include any links, but Googling Travel Battle will get you 3 or 4 good reviews of this product from purchasers.
I don't really know why somebody buy this game. I prefer Commands and Colors. I like these wooden pieces. The game is looking classic and the rules work good enough if you want to play a large Napoleonic Battle in 1 or 1 and a half hour. It was often fine for me because I met my father in law and it was not too difficult to explain the rules etc. and i could move the game in a simpel sack.
I think that reason is maybe that there are always people who love to be a part of a hype. Perhaps the Perrys are clever and manage to put the advertising in the best way you could.
For example there is a new set of rules in Germany "Koalitionskriege". If a member of our Group would not be on Facebook nobody of us would know it, because it seams that the author has no Homepage, blog or something like that.
