We are gearing up for a club game using these rules so need to double check Ive got the understanding of hits on units. When a unit say for instance a foot btn suffers say 2 hits from artillery in a turn. That unit will carry those 2 hits over into the next turn and can then suffer more hits which would then when added to previous 2 hits register a possibly adverse morale check result for that unit. The only way to rally off hits is for the CinC to come over and rally said troops and thus lose some of the hits suffered by unit. Please confirm that i have read and interpreted this correctly.
I believe units can rally hits (all but the last one) if they are beyond a certain distance (scale dependant) from enemy units. Units further away still can rally 2 hits. If units get 4 hits they have to pull back in any event.
Thus you have an incentive to pull your beat up battalions out of line and replace them with fresh troops - just like a real general !
Mark:- re-read pages 35-36 and you'll get the full story. One of the basic tactical decisions during combat is whether to risk keeping units in the fight or pulling them back to recover. Use of a second line and/or some kind of reserve is recommended!
