Here I'm working for a scenario representing the several fightings around the crossing of the river Rhine by the large army of prince Carl.
The Austrian generals didn't agreed about the question if they should fight a last battle before leaving the western theatre of war before marching to Bohemia, where Frederick II rejoined war. Traun Held a speech and voted in the war council to cross the river without battle if that is possible.
The French generals didn't relied on their troops. They were defeated on several occassions during the last months, often outnumbering their opponents. The duc de Noailles as the CinC after moving from the north with strong reinforcements advanced cautiously and slowly giving the Austrians a good chance to escape (later Frederick II will blame the French commanders for their decissions and lack of pressure).
To cross the Rhine with the large French and imperial army on their heels was a dangerous affair.
De Noailles had 61 bn.s and 142 sqns French troops and 17 bn.s, 54 sqn.s and grenadier-coys Bavarian and Hessian troops.
Carl and Traun had 54 bn.s and 22 regiments of cavalry and grenadiers.
Only parts of these armies were used, when Loewendahl finaly launched his attack at the evening of the 23th of august 1744.
