Stand firm for the Tsar and Holy Mother Russia! First unit of GNW using plastic 1/72. The plan is two small armies to use with roi’s WSS variant, which covers GNW, see download section. A normal sized unit of 4 stands. I got some advice on basing from damnitz who uses 40mm x 40mm for his big collection of figures though he felt that stands this size with 1/72 could do with 6 figs not 4. I think he is right. The rules advise 30mm x 30mm for 1/72 figures. In the end I stuck to the rules 30mm frontage with 4 figures but thought the 30mm depth looked wrong, esp with people pointing muskets forward (marching might be OK) so went for a 40mm depth. No longer a square base but I don’t think this matters that much. I wonder if 5 stands might look better for a normal sized unit? Cav and guns will be on 40mm x 40mm. Onwards!

Thanks damitz, the Lesnaya game looks very good indeed. Pre proper cadence marching I always like to mix poses in any unit. Rightly or wrongly I prefer the same or similar poses for things like SYW.
For WSS and GNW I think they should be a bit less organised! That said I will do a marching unit for the Russians. I hope to do the Swedes charging heroically forward, with pike as well as musket. One step at a time though.
I see I have got some flock on the figures! Fortunately this just needs brushing off, it's not stuck on, I had only just finished when took the picture. Also something strange appears to have happened to the hat band on the musketeer at far left of unit as well!! Bit of touching up needed.

I think that some different poses are looking well for all units. "You" always have some of your soldiers who have to change the flint of their musket or have other problems with their gun. I think that it's most likely that they repaired the muskets still standing in their unit, because the NCOs stood behind the line and could stop the soldiers from leaving the formation. The mechanism of the musket is simple but delicate.
I did like it to mix some wounded figures in the ranks of my guards and Regiment Navarre for example.

Good points, bit of mix and match with poses is my preferred option though there is nothing wrong with all striding out together too Re Swedish Pikes charging, my plan is a bit of hacking about! A charging musketeer is going to get a pike. I think it will work as long as you don't look too closely. You are right, I don't think the Mars figures will mix in with Zvezda and will tower over Strelets. It was Mars figures for the French-Dutch war that got me back into 1/72 plastics (my SYW are 10mm metal). By way of interest I attach a couple of pics of my Mars 1670's figures, there is a lot wrong with them (the Cav are particularly awkward to do) but they are OK to play with. Nothing to do with HoW but this is what set me onto looking at GNW in plastic to use under HoW.

Nothing to do with HoW but this is what set me onto looking at GNW in plastic to use under HoW. Many thanks for the photos! As Plasticsoldierreview often said: "Viewed from a distance in massed ranks with an expert paint job these figures would look OK, but then so would almost any figure." You did very well. I thought too, how interesting is this: a full range of late 17th century figures. But if you see Details of the figures, then they are looking creepy. But I used some Mars figures for my TYW-armies too, just because there is no alternative in plastic at least. But the weapons and other Equipment often are difficult to make out. Do the soldiers have swords, small swords or even clubs?
The trimming on Zvezda-figures is difficult because the plastic is not soft. Nevertheless I sometimes cut the pouches of some artillerymen to use them as officers for example. Especially the Zvezda-officers are looking excellent. It's a pitty that Zvezda never produced a set of staff for the GNW although their GNW-sets were bestsellers.

I know!!! It's a bit stupid. But they are cheap and light to carry and I can see what I am painting. Whilst the Mars figs are a bit peculiar the Zvezda ones are actually very good. You'll be doing the little HoW GNW game when I get enough figures done by the way

I rather like those Mars figures, particularly the cavalry officer, still optimistically wearing 3/4 armour!. They have an almost impressionistic look to them which seems to work well for those figures.
