Thank you for your nice report. I really like the style of your table, clean and very clear. My table is always full of remains of flock etc., the cloth wrinkled...
The map fits perfectly with your table and style of account.
Good enough to be used in a book.
"My nagging doubt is that rules trying to be 'simple' really need a clever mechanism or two to make them interesting and engaging to play, or they tend to become a bit bland."
I had the impression reading your "Simple Rules", that they don't have the splendour of the original HoW-rules. Sometimes even my wife felt the genius in the HoW-rules when our generals become characters, if the poor Brigadier XY refused to move for the third time and we decide that he must be a bookish fool or a traitor.
Maybe your new rules Need some amendment of fun, although these ideas sometimes split bunch of wargamers, asking how far the fun can go to offer more entertainment.
The scenario is just perfect for your attempt, not too complicated and not too special (like a flanking assault) - just frontal advance and fighting.
I hope you enjoyed the game as much as I did the reading.
