Just dropped a beauty on the Pendraken forum. Somebody commented that he didn't like Might and Reason, or Maurice as rules for the SYW. He stated that he much preferred Polemos. I replied that, although I quite like the Polemos ECW rules I find the others in the stable rather tedious. Someone then replied to my post that this was the guy who actually wrote the Poloemos SYW rules. Ooer! Anyone else dropped any clangers lately? Best not to mention names.
The Polemos SYW set of rules seem to have been in development longer than the actual Seven Years War! The original concept of Polemos was for a series of rule sets designed specifically for 6mm figures. The 'tempo point bidding' system seems to be at the heart of it and designed to provide some friction to command and control - not to everyone's taste but some swear by it. Horses for courses I suppose. Personally I think HoW handles such matters in a more satisfactory manner. I have read both the ECW and WSS Polemos sets but neither inspired me to jump into 6mm gaming nor their respective periods. As and when the SYW Polemos variant comes out I will look at a copy and may even buy a set but I am not really one of their target audience.
I have to agree thomasmante that the tempo bidding system is not really my cup of tea. I was very excited when Polemos FPW came out, only to find the system unsatisfactory and in parts incomprehensible. Thank goodness Bloody Big Battles came on the scene, which does for C19th warfare what HoW does for the mid-C18th.
How on earth did you manage to get hold of Bloody Big Battles? Seems as rare as hens teeth, Caliver books claim to have copies for sale but one is never quite sure if such claims relate to actual stock in hand!
I bought my copy from Caliver, but it must have been towards the end of 2014. I know Irregular Miniatures did stock them but last year had sold out. Unfortunately, despite Chris Pringle coming from Oxford, the rules are printed in the USA and then ordered by Irregular and Caliver from there.
